The Most Common Reasons for Divorce

There are many different reasons why spouses in Illinois may decide to get a divorce. However, some contributing factors are common among divorcing couples.

Using information obtained from a study conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, researchers compiled a list of the most common reasons for divorce. For the study, 31 women and 21 men who had participated in a premarital program that counseled couples on communication and resolving conflicts were polled. The polling, which focused on the individuals who were divorced 14 years after having participated in the program, posed questions about the reasons for the divorce and if the separation could be attributed to multiple factors or a single, motivating factor.

Differences of opinions regarding religion and insufficient premarital education are common divorce factors. A survey conducted by the Pew Center reveals that 69 percent of married people report that they and their spouse have the same views about religion. Regarding premarital counseling, a substantial number of individuals polled stated that the premarital educational course was not enough to fully prepare them for marriage.

Not having support from family is another common contributing factor of divorce. The results of a longitudinal study that evaluated 373 couples revealed that the likelihood of divorce dropped by 20 percent if a husband maintained a close relationship with his spouse’s family. The likelihood of a divorce increased, however, if the wife had a close relationship with her husband’s family.

An attorney who practices family law could help a client obtain the desired divorce settlement terms. Litigation may be used for matters such as the division of marital assets, alimony, child custody, child support and other divorce issues. In some cases, negotiation may be used to resolve divorce disputes.
